SsYiNnCk is a full-length dance work that addresses the value of sports-based practices in society over artistic endeavours. It aims to bridge the difference between athleticism and artistry in a culmination of bodily exhaustion, utilising methods of absurdity, repetition and even comedy. This project underwent its first development earlier this year in June, where it was presented in the University of Melbourne’s only student run arts festival, MUSE, in July. This version of the work involved an entanglement of 3 performers, cascading through time using a range of objects that are associated with water. A painter’s tarp lies idly in the background, it reconstructs forms as the work unfolds. The trio digress through an improvisation structure with attention and refinement. There is a moment of climax, clothing is removed, swim goggles are applied, and the performers move into a uniform array of line and intensity as they prepare for a routine. Long and formal movement phrases sweep across the floor before a sustained resurrection softens the energy down to a simmer. The performance appears to conclude however, the dancers do not bow, instead they remove further clothing, and apply their nose plugs in a preparatory ritual. Their final act demonstrates an electric routine of power and synchronicity, a showstopping performance which dismantles in a horrifying image of decaying unison.
